Charlotte works as the chief of police in Winden. She is an intelligent and rational woman who was raised by her grandfather H.G. Tannhaus. She knows nothing about her parents.
Together with her husband Peter, Charlotte has two daughters Franziska and Elisabeth. She is also a caretaker for Peter's elderly father Helge Doppler. Charlotte and Peter have slept in separate bedrooms ever since she discovered he frequented the transsexual prostitute Bernadette. They've never spoken openly about it.
Charlotte is in charge of the missing children investigations in Winden. She searches high and low, but can't find a single clue. She is forced to remove colleague Ulrich Nielsen from the case when he takes matters into his own hands looking for his son Mikkel.
She is the last person to hear from Ulrich before he follows Helge Doppler into the caves in 2019. He left a voicemail saying they should be asking when took the children as opposed to who took them. Charlotte then finds a photograph of Ulrich in the police archives from 1953.
In the summer of 2020, there are still no signs of the six people missing from Winden so an external special investigator named Clausen is sent in to help.
Charlotte reluctantly assists Clausen in his questioning before signing herself out on sick leave. She doesn't reveal that she's been investigating time travel with her husband Peter. In the bunker, they are collecting information from Claudia Tiedemann's notebook, the notes left behind in the hotel by the Stranger, and the belongings of her late grandfather H.G. Tannhaus.
The Dopplers meet the Stranger and learn that he is Jonas. Together with Hannah Kahnwald, they recruit a skeptical Katharina Nielsen to their cause.
Charlotte has never known who her parents are. The only thing she knows is that the clockmaker who raised her isn't her biological grandfather – she was adopted. For a long time, Charlotte has suspected that her past is somehow connected to the strange events happening in Winden.
She's unsure why Noah gave her daughter Elisabeth a golden watch engraved with "For Charlotte." One day, Noah appears suddenly. She recognizes him from the facial composite. Noah shows Charlotte a photograph of him as a young man holding a baby – Noah is her father.
