The Clockmaker (1986)

Full name: H.G. Tannhaus. An old oddball, and a quirky genius. Charlotte’s grandfather. He brings the girl up — whatever happened to her parents he does not say.

His specialty is time. He knows all about it and even wrote a book about the possibility of time travel.

In 1986, the Clockmaker receives a visit from the Stranger. He asks him to repair the mysterious apparatus that he always carries with him in a case. The Clockmaker has the same apparatus in a drawer — but the Stranger’s example is much, much older. Together, they activate it — with the help of the smartphone that Ulrich left behind in the Clockmaker’s workshop 33 years ago, and a sample of the radioactive Cs-137 isotope.
