Michael’s suicide note
When Michael Kahnwald hangs himself in the attic, he leaves behind a letter. The envelope bears the inscription, “Do not open before 4 November, 10:13 p.m.”. His adoptive mother, Ines Kahnwald, takes it. Later, she will give it to her grandson, Jonas. But he has already read it and destroyed it, having been given it by the Stranger.
From now on, Jonas carries the letter with him, until — as an adult, the Stranger — he gives it to his youthful self. The letter which Jonas burns in 2019 is already decades old and has traveled through time. The one his grandmother gives him, in contrast, is just a few weeks old. And yet they are one and the same letter.
